SAT Accommodations
It is possible for students with different types of disabilities to receive extended support during the SAT test. Some examples of impairments that qualify for extended support may include blindness and visual impairment, learning disabilities, dyslexia, brain injuries, motor impairments, diabetes and many more. Application for aids for the SAT test are done on the CollegeBoard website. It is important to apply well in advance and to obtain an approval well before the test. Below we have provided more information about the type of assistance available and more information about the application process.
There are different types of tools available during the SAT test and the student will be able to take part of one or more of these depending on what is approved by CollegeBoard. Here are the various aids offered:
- Extended time
- Extra and/or extended time for breaks
- Reading and hearing aids
- Calculator with extended functions
By clicking on these links, you can navigate around and read more about the specific aids and what documents are required. Different aids require different documents to prove their application. An example of a supporting document may be a current evaluation or report from a physician.
Important:
Starting the application process well in advance is incredibly important. Approval of the application from the CollegeBoard Committee can take up to or even more than seven weeks. The student must have been approved before the test to be able to use aids on the test day. The student may risk getting an invalid result if misused.

The application process is fastest and easiest if the student applies for support with the help of their high school. The student will apply to have the test done at their own high school during the holidays. It is important to consult with the school if they are willing to help with this. If the school can't help, then it is best to contact CollegeBoard to find a solution.

When a request for temporary support is submitted, the following documentation will need to be provided.

- A description of the student’s injury or medical condition and need for the requested support.
- A letter from a Doctor that responds to each of the following elements:
- Detailed description of injury and degree of impairment.
- Date of injury/onset of condition.
- Expected date of recovery.
The documentation must clearly indicate the doctor’s name, specialization, address, and phone number. This request for temporary support will not be considered unless each of the following items have been addressed. Documentation must be signed and dated by the doctor.
A school principal will need to fill in these:
- SSD Coordinator Sign-Up Form
- SSD SAT School-Based Testing Payment Authorization Form
The student can start their application by completing the documents themselves. The student will also need a school administrator or teacher to fill in parts of the application. The documents must be signed and sent to the CollegeBoard.
Obtain the correct documentation as proof of the existing disability.
