NCAA Post-Eligibility Insurance Program

NCAA Post-Eligibility Insurance Program

Overview

The NCAA now sponsors a Post-Eligibility Insurance (PEI) program, which provides coverage for student-athletes beyond their playing days.  This coverage can last up to 2 years (104 weeks) after an athlete separates from school or voluntarily withdraws from athletics. A-G Specialty Insurance is the provider for the NCAA PEI program.

The program covers excess accidental medical expenses for athletically related injuries sustained during participation in an NCAA-qualifying intercollegiate sport. Any injuries that occurred on or after August 1st, 2024, and are properly documented by the athletic department staff are eligible to be covered. (This will require notifying and discussing with your athletic trainer).

Key Points
  • ONLY for NCAA athletes, covers all NCAA divisions (D1, D2, D3).
  • Injury must be sustained during participation in a qualifying intercollegiate sport on or after August 1st, 2024.
  • DOES NOT include coverage for injuries sustained by participating in club or intermural sports.
  • No action is needed to enrol, all NCAA student-athletes are automatically enrolled, meaning you DO NOT need to opt in for coverage before an injury occurs.
  • Action is not required by the student-athlete unless they need to file a claim during the benefit period.
  • Injuries MUST be reported and documented, and filed with the athletics department of the school at which the student-athletes participated when the injury occurred.
  • Coverage extends to international athletes who return home – subject to the regulations of the student-athlete's country of citizenship.
  • Up to $90,000 coverage per injury (with no deductible) for up to 2 years (104 weeks) after the athlete separates from school or voluntarily withdraws from athletics. o Voluntarily withdraws means submission of a formal voluntary withdrawal from the student-athlete with no intent to transfer to and resume intercollegiate sport/activities at another school.
  • Up to $25,000 (of the $90,000) is available for mental health services related to the documented injury.
  • The benefit period begins at certain times depending on whether you’re an undergraduate, graduate, or prospective student. Please click here for more information.

In summary, this is simply an option for athletes to explore individually and decide whether the NCAA PEI program is something they’d like to pursue. There’s nothing you need to do right now—just keep it in mind as a resource you can come back to if/when it becomes relevant. And if questions come up along the way, you’re welcome to reach out to Chloe Bagshaw directly for clarification. Keystone isn’t able to provide any further guidance beyond sharing the information.

Chloe Bagshaw works as an Operations Associate at Keystone Sports. She is currently utilising the NCAA PEI program after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery in her final semester as a collegiate athlete. Chloe is happy to explain how she went through the process and PEI program experience with anyone interested.
