Transfer und Grad Students

A transfer student is someone who is already studying at a German/European university and has already earned a certain number of credits.

If you want to continue your studies in the US, you will need sufficient credits – at least 12 US credits per semester.

You will also need:
  1. Your high school diploma in German and English
  2. Your previous university transcripts in German and English
  3.  An evaluation of these transcripts into the American grading system
  4. If you are not a native English speaker or did not attend an exclusively English-speaking school, Duolingo or TOEFL

A US transfer is a student who wants to transfer to another university within the US.

To do this, you must:
  1. Transfer your transcripts from your current US university to your new university. This can usually be done digitally via your old university's website.
  2. Transfer your SEVIS record (SEVIS ID) from your old university's I-20 to your new university.
  3. Possibly new financial documents.
If you have already earned a bachelor's degree and would like to complete a master's degree in the US, you are a Grad student.

Please note that you will need your bachelor's degree certificate and transcript of records before the semester in the US begins, as these often overlap.
So make sure you receive these documents in good time, as they still need to be evaluated in the US.

A bachelor's degree in the US takes four years, while in Germany/Europe it often takes only three years. Although both are equivalent, this often causes problems. Your transcripts must be converted to the American grading system, and almost all evaluation companies state that a three-year bachelor's degree is NOT equivalent to a four-year bachelor's degree. Only a few companies, such as IEE, confirm that both are equivalent. Therefore, your transcripts and bachelor's degree certificate must evaluated by IEE. See also our arcticle IEE Evaluation

You will also need:
  1. Your high school diploma in German and English.
  2. If you are not a native English speaker or did not attend an exclusively English-speaking school, Duolingo or TOEFL.
  3. Depending on your future university, the GMAT.
