Create a College Field Hockey application video

How to record your highlight video:

  • Ideally, the video should be between 4 and 6 minutes long.
  • The player must be clearly identified in every play (using arrows, circles, or text if needed).
  • Whenever possible, use footage from an elevated position where at least half of the field can be seen. This helps coaches understand positioning, movement, and decision-making.
  • Always continue each play until the outcome is clear. Start the clip 2–3 seconds before you get involved in the action and keep it going until the play finishes (pass completed, turnover, shot, or end of the sequence).
  • Use a tripod or any stabilizing support to ensure the video is steady.
  • Avoid excessive close-up shots.
  • Avoid long introductions. Coaches receive many videos every day and usually watch only the first minute before deciding whether to continue. The goal is to make an immediate impact.

Video Structure

1. Introduction

You may include a short introduction at the beginning:

  • Ideally, this should be a simple image with your basic information (name, position, graduation year, etc.), lasting no more than 5–7 seconds.
  • If you prefer, you can include a short personal introduction speaking to the camera (name, where you play, and why you want to study and compete in the U.S.).
This should not exceed 45–60 seconds.

2. Match Highlights (Main Part)

This is the most important part of the video.

  • Start with your best actions and then include additional complementary plays.
  • Include clips from official matches only.
  • Show a variety of situations that reflect your overall game, such as:
    • Offensive actions (goals, assists, circle entries, key passes)
    • Defensive actions (tackles, interceptions, recoveries)
    • Decision-making and positioning
    • Transitions and off-the-ball movement
  • Make sure each clip clearly shows what happens after your action.
  • Avoid including clips where:
    • The quality is too low
    • You are difficult to identify
    • There are negative attitudes (complaints, lack of effort, etc.)
    • There are inappropriate comments from the background

3. Optional: Training Exercises

You may also include training clips as an additional section.

  • Training exercises should look technically very clean and well executed.
  • Take the time to repeat drills if necessary to achieve high-quality execution.
  • Well-executed technical training clips can help capture a coach’s attention early and show your fundamentals clearly.

Complete Games

Often coaches want to watch at least one complete game in addition to the highlight video in order to better assess the level at which you play week after week. Therefore, film as many games as possible and select the ones that give the best overall picture of your performance and the level of both teams.
